if he is a professor i believe most of his work is lecturing, preparing lecture notes and at times doing research. they can also be very busy as they also supervise other students who are completing their final year projects especially degree students. they can be pretty tied up sometimes but normally this is their responsibility.
if he is a lab technician, they are usually involved in supporting lab lectures, preparation of materials before a class if it uses the lab. usually after classes, they either do help final year students, help up in campus related job and etc. it depends. some lab technicians tend to be quite free.
come to think of it, he could be doing anything in the university. he could be a course counselor, administrator, accountant, manager, supervisor or anything. i think a little more details would help.
