That is all in the mind of the individual, people have different thoughts of what is mediocre and what is gifted right?

I believe it was Jesus who is credited with saying "By their fruits ye shall know them." The gifted (with whatever gifts; including talents) show their gifts early on if you pay attention. A child will talk meaningfully earlier than most children. They will learn to read and write before they get to school. They will be endlessly curious, and ask millions of questions. They will experiment with things; making things and trying things in a variety of ways. They will respond more strongly to educational toys and games than to more passive activities. They will talk with adults, and enjoy hanging out with their grandparents in positive interaction. Some of my most precious memories are of hanging around with my grandmother in the kitchen while she explained what she was doing, and letting me help when I wouldn't be a nuisance. And I'd work with her in the garden, and in the sewing room.

The most important thing to give a gifted child is your time and attention. That and keep them away from the crushing boredom of the public schools!
