yes it is. It stands for National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing.
Beginning as regional entertainment in the Southeastern U.S., NASCAR has grown to become the second most popular professional sport in terms of television ratings inside the U.S., ranking behind only the National Football League. Internationally, NASCAR races are broadcast in over 150 countries. It holds 17 of the top 20 attended sporting events in the U.S.1, and has 75 million fans who purchase over $2 billion in annual licensed product sales. These fans are considered the most brand-loyal in all of sports, and as a result, Fortune 500 companies sponsor NASCAR more than any other sport.

It amazes me how these people say racing is not a sport. If they think just anybody could do it I wish there was a way they could drive one of those cars for three to five hours, then they might have a little more respect. As to the assertion that NASCAR drivers are a bunch of rednecks driving in circles well they are the richest rednecks you will ever see.It takes many skills to be a NASCAR driver,it's not just turning left, drivers must be able to give feed back to the crew chief as to how the car is handling, does the car need adjustments if so what kind,is it loose or tight in the turns, does it have enough bite coming up out of the turns does it need a track bar adjustment or a half a round of wedge,do the tires need more or less air pressure. Now for those who don't know what I mean by these terms, well that's the problem. In order to enjoy any sport you have to know a little bit about whats going on and have some understanding as to what it takes to be successfull in that sport. In other words you need to know how the game is played. If these NASCAR bashers think it doesn't take skill and talent to drive bumper to bumper side by side at 200mph plus then I think maybe they might be a little mentally deficient.Personally I don't know very much about Soccer or Hockey so I dont enjoy watching them, but that's due to my own ignorance of the game.So all you bashers do something about your ingnorance of the SPORT and maybe you would like it a little better if you had a clue what was going on.

Yes NASCAR is a sport. Believe it or not but racing is very intense on a person. Catching 180+ speeds is not something that people do every day and cannot critize. Sure like in basketball, people go to their drive ways and can actually relate to the sport. Motorsports is somehting that not everyone can relate to, especially Formula 1.

Yep, and here's why:
Ever driven really close to other cars on the freeway? Kinda scary? well try it at 180 mph.
In a car thats loud (the drivers window is wide open with the exception of the net), uncomfortable (you're strapped in to basically a cacoon), and hot (engine heat makes the inside of the car around 100+), for 4 hours. Racing other drivers and reacting to others at - 180 mph.
Oh not to mention when the car won't turn and they have to fight the wheel to not wreck. Plus you have the pit crews tossing tires around like their foam, holding a 60 pound gas can with one arm, and making car adjustments in only 15 seconds.
sigh - I wish all those who say "they just drive around in circles" could enroll in the Richard Petty driving experience. I guarantee they wouldn't say that afterwards.
When asked if they ever had to go to the bathroom during a race, a driver replied, "No, we sweat so much we don't need to."

It is a sport. And it does take alot of talent and skill to drive a car and handle the different tracks at 187 (plus) m.p.h.
I like to see some of you that don't call it a sport to get behind the wheel and just try to do what they do. You would fail!

Yes! And you do need talent & skill to do what they do. They drive cars really close to each other & the cars can go 200 miles per hour. You don't think that's difficult to do???? And most of the tracks are OVALS not CIRCLES. But there are two road courses that they race on, also. Maybe you should watch a race, you might understand it better then.
Here's the schedule: http://www.nascar.com/races/cup/2006/data/schedule.html

No it is not!
Comon people, everything and anything could be a sport.
Two people wlking to the mailbox could be a sprt if they were trying to get there before the other. We have to draw the line somewhere. A group of rednecks driving in a circel for hours is not a sport.
Nuff said.

not a stick and ball sport, but yes - it is physically draining to sit in that car for 200 laps, and there is a lot of strategy involved. It just is a bore to watch sometimes and I don't understand how bumping is allowed.
