Spy-ware removers are useful, but they don't address the root cause.

You need to prevent this sort of junk getting on your computer in the first place. No-one has yet suggested going to Microsoft Windows Update. This is absolutely essential. You must go there at once and get all the updates. You may not be able to at first, because some spyware programs are specially crafted to thwart you.

To have a (relatively) spyware/popup-free experience, you need to be running Windows 98SE or later (you're probably on Windows XP like most people, which is ideal). Your browser should be Internet Explorer 6 or whatever is the latest stable version of Mozilla Firefox. I would recommend avoiding Internet Explorer 7, unless you would enjoy becoming a guinea pig for Microsoft.

Go to the Windows Update site, or set your PC to get the updates automatically (Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates->Automatically). Of course you should be running a legitimate version of XP, but even if you're not you can still get most updates automatically (just not through the website).

You've some kind of spyware on your computer. Download and install spybot s&d from http://www.safer-networking.org/ It'll remove most of the spyware. Take this as a lesson and never use Internet Explorer again. Get firefox and surf the web safely. http://getfirefox.com/
One advice, never look for smileys, screensavers or any fancy stuff like that. They do nothing useful and most of them come with spyware bundled.

You have adware and/or spyware on your computer. You need to install and run anti-adware/spyware programs. There are two great anti-spy programs you can download off the Internet free. One is AdAware by Lavasoft, and the other is Spybot-Search and Destroy. Just Google them and you should find sites that offer the downloads for free. I have both and run both, which is good because one often catches something that the other had missed.

Your PC is infected with adware and spyware, virus and trojans. It starts even when you switched on your PC.
go to Start -> Run, type msconfig and enter. On the last right-hand tab under Startup, these are the programs that start up when you switch on your PC. You may recognise some programs that you install and these are safe to uncheck. Your PC will start faster. What I suggest is either you do a trial and error, uncheck all, restart your PC and see what pops up, what starts up and what not.
You also need to have a combination of anti-virus, one or two anti-spyware adware to do a full scan.
