How is the market lately for web design? I have being doing design on the side for personal and for friends for about 10 yrs now. Looking to move into doing it for a career but wonder how its fairing in this economic time.

On average what are the basic rates of today? Hard to find work? Most build just basic html sites or are people still going after Flash, Macromedia? Any tips would be helpful.

I think in a couple years... people will get so lazy that they won't need to learn html and css... yes, i know it's sad because i enjoy working with it. but i know other programs like dreamweaver will come along and they will be more high tech.. i, on the other hand HATE dreamweaver.. i'd rather just do it myself.. but i know web designers will fade in the next couple of years... eek. i'm scared. Flash is getting REALLY popular.

Market for web design.. come on.. there is a lot of need in web pages, and it not like it tending to change in near future..
And profesionals is always needed.

rates.. depends on country you live.. (and your knowledge/experience) .. ability to negotate.. and lot.. of lot of factors..
find work.. if you have that other poeople needs, of course not. Just make yourself visible somehow. (homepage/advertisement/CV...)
I am flash ActionScripter, I build all kind of aplications with flash, and have more then enough work. There is a lot of people who want snot just basic web page, but something more personal/unique. or deploy hole aplication/servise to the web.
Of course. there is companies who just whants to put info to the web..

"10 yrs for personal and friends" you say... just show your work to others. and listen that they say. (good way to be noticed too.)

good luck.
