I imagine they are attached to the same pipe but should I really be able to hear it like that?

The second answer is probably correct. If the vent pipe for this portion of your drain system is plugged, when your washer discharges water into the line it probably fills the pipe to the point that it produces a vacuum, (wanting air), and pulls the water out of the trap under the kitchen sink, thereby allowing the noise or gurgling sounds to come up. Once the washer is done and you use the kitchen sink again, the trap gets refilled and you don't notice it anymore. You need to check the vent, probably comes out of the roof somewhere. You can stick a garden hose down it and turn it on. Frequently that will flush out whatever is in it.

This is normal if the kitchen is located near the laundry. All drains route to the same pipe! The only indication that the vent is clogged is when the water will not drain fast enough. Just hearing the water is not an indication anything is wrong.

You need to make sure that you have a proper P-trap on your kitchen sink. The trap holds water to stop sewer gas from coming through and if you hear water it indicates that you have a strait pipe connection. The P-trap should be in the cabinet under the sink. If your handy then you can easily install one but if not you should call a plumber.

Call a plumber and get your pipes flushed. Best place to start this is from the vent stack (plumbing) on the roof.
