The two basic principles are conversion of power from one form to another, and amplification. Conversion lets you sense different kinds of power, such as the power of sound waves or the power of light, and convert it to a form that's easier to amplify and process, such as electronic signals. Amplification lets you sense very small amounts of power, and make the signal strong enough to process effectively.
