Almost everyone above is clueless. Windows 2000 does not have a firewall.
Will need more details on how your system is set up. But here are some general tips.
If you have a Cable/DSL router, that's your firewall. You should NOT bypass that! Your machine will be attacked within seconds.
If you're on a business or school system, the firewall is maintained by the IT department. They won't be disabling the firewall, so don't bother asking.
What programme are you trying to install? Check the docs and see what ports need to be opened. You may be able to set port forwarding on your Cable/DSL router, or ask the IT folks to open the port on their firewall.

I can only assume that you are wanting to do this for the same reasons i do at times--that is to speed up the download. It takes me about 2hrs to download a movie without the firewall in place ,and about 14hrs with it in place. But its the same with any huge download,if you want it fast then drop the wall and take the risk of a virus sneaking in.I use mozzilla firefox but it is a permanent firewall and i cant disable it so i then use explorer.Oh and if you also have an antivirus program then you have to disable the firewall in that as well.Use avast to arrest the viruses-free antivirus--the best available-http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html

I had problems with kaspersky. It did something to my firewall too. I had to end up uninstalling the program and chose another software. For some reason, kaspersky didn't work well with my computer. I have a windows xp. Now I am using Windows Live One Care and it's great.

your firewall should have an option to allow the wireless access without disabling it.
