To create a common ideal which Americans can unite behind, and a common basis for the legal system under which we all live. It is, in many ways, what MAKES us American.
The first 10 amendments to the Constitution are the Bill of Rights, which are designed to protect us from being preyed upon by our own government. We can protest government actions in peaceable assembly because of the Constitution, worship who or what we want to (or worship nothing) because of the Constitution, live in our homes without having to worry about a cop breaking in without a warrant because of the Constitution.
The Constitution gives us the right to vote for our leaders, says who can be nominated, how long their terms are, and what their powers are. It defines the different branches of the government, explains the relations between the states and the nation, and much more.

The purpose of ANY constitution is to define how a nation will operate.
In very general terms its like the club rules that the citizens of a nation agree to obide by. It is a social contract that we as citizens agree to and hold the government to.
