Diesel fuel is not gas, it is a refined oil product. Diesel fuel is closer to being a light weight oil and is mush easier to refine than gasoline. In most states, particularly rural states it is less highly taxed.

it's not as refined as regular gas. therefor it's cheaper to produce and cheaper to sale.
