I had trouble following that, especially after he landed on it and within minutes he was beaten down by 3 goons just by stepping on the island!?!?!?

Superman gains his powers from the yellow sun, so the implication is that little "sunbathing" thing he did after leaving the plane somehow recharged him enough that, with a lot of determination, he was able to lift the island. It's kind of hard to swallow that he recharged that much just by dancing above the clouds for a few seconds, but that's what Singer wanted to convey to us.

Because the director figured that by the time the audience got to that part, they just wanted the movie to end and they didn't care how.
