Just purchased 27 acres. Mostly pasture and fenced for cattle (barbed wire) but not sure it's beef that I wish to produce or deal with. Any other good ideas for a rural business on so much land?

The black walnut tree's would be a great investment for my grandchildrens benefit and truly is a great idea. I'm thinking right now however, more along the lines of making a monthly income on the farm.
You all have given super ideas and I'll be looking into all of them. Thank You!

If you live close by a large community I would invest in either 100% organic fruits and vegetables to market to individuals, restaurants and health food stores.

Or if your land is not part of an agricultural land management restriction, I would build self storage buildings.

Consider a tree farm for part of it. There are tax advantages and tax free money when you harvest. How about fruit trees? You could sell the harvest. Or a strawberry or vegetable field for a pick your own enterprise. If your far enough south you could dig a 4' deep pond and raise shrimp to sell. They only need about 4 months 'til harvest. This is being done here in northern Ohio. How about some trails and a mud pit for ATVs? A several acre lake for fishing and running your personal watercraft. Spread out the topsoil or sell it to recover the costs of the dig. Board horses. A paintball field. Decide what YOU like to do and make that field your own. Good Luck!

Raise Boer goats. They're the new big thing in Texas agriculture. They're a heck of a lot easier to raise (and more profitable) than cattle (especially on a little 27 acre spread).

I read in the news that many farmers are now growing crops to distill into liquor rather than selling the crops for food because distilling (or selling to distillers) is much more profitable. You might want to look into that....
