Yes being able to read is a good answer, but historically more important is the invention of the printing press which brought education to the poor masses. They no longer had to rely on the truthful word being brought to them by religious figures or other governmental persons. They could judge their own written word. Sadly, now the poor masses are being "fed" their opinions by the media of today.
