Did you see the Miss America pageant this last time around? Have you noticed that things are changing a bit with the pageant? Being more responsive to the mood and political correctness of society, I guess. As a native from the Sooner state, it’s almost a requirement for us, after all, we’ve had three lovely women from Oklahoma become Miss America: Jayne Jayro, Susan Powell, and Shawntell Smith. Shoot, almost as many as Texas.
And the Miss America pageant has evolved over the years since its first stab at gaining attention. We should remember that is the primary reason it was started - to attract attention to Atlantic City. Tourism was falling off and the city needed something. The Miss America pageant was started to fill the bill. And it did.
I think Americans know that theme song “There she is . . .” As well as any. But did you know that the man who wrote the now famous theme song, Bernie Wayne, had never in his life seen a Miss America pageant when he wrote it? Not bad imagination, huh! But the one who probably changed things the most, in ways she never expected, was Miss America 1951, Yolande Betbeze. Actually it was a scandal.
You see, the day Miss Betbeze won the title, she announced at a breakfast meeting that she would not pose in swimsuits during her reign. She found it demeaning and demoralizing to women. Well, actually she wasn’t the first to do that. An earlier Miss America had taken that stand and gotten away with it. But this year was different. Very different indeed. You see this year the pageant and the winner had a sponsor: The Catalina Bathing Suit company. And as you might guess, one thing the sponsor wanted for all the money that they were pouring into the pageant, was to show Miss America in one of their swimsuits. As a matter of fact, they had already booked the winner on a nationwide swimsuit tour.
Well, it wasn’t gonna happen! Nope, Miss Betbeze refused. The representative from Catalina got pretty hot about the whole thing, and declared that if she wouldn’t live up to the contracts, that not only would the company pull their support, but they would also do what they could to ruin the pageant. Can you guess what happened next? It’s a Little Known Fact that it was the refusal of Miss America 1951 to appear in a bathing suit that prompted a new pageant, one that has, on the occasion, rivaled Miss America for publicity and coverage.
Yep. As with many things in life, it was a rift. It was an argument with the winner that caused the Catalina Bathing Suit company to start the Miss USA Pageant, and later the Miss Universe Pageants. So in essence, every Miss USA and Miss Universe has one person to thank for her reign, her fame and her fortune: Yolande Betbeze, Miss America 1951.

Just different organizations, doing the same thing. Like Miss USA and Miss America. Like Burger King and McDonalds.
Though it would be nice to see some entrants in Miss Universe who aren't from Earth. I sense a conspiracy there. Where are the Klingons and Vulcans? :D

They just have different people running them...Just like there's a Miss USA and a Miss America. Different organizations. ^^

Donald Trump owns one organization but not both besides I'm never seen a Miss World pageant on TV.

Miss World is for the chicks of this planet ,where as Miss Universe is for hybrids(humans/aliens).
