The main plot is the story that the readers are following. The sub plots are additional stories that tie into the main plot in some way.
And no, they can not be removed.The subplot(s) are what give the work its depth. If you have a straight-foward,linear plot then you will have flat characters and the story will be a flop. Sub-plots are also often what give the reader a break from the main storyline-something new in the mix to keep up the pace. They can also heighten the suspense in a work,by coming in at a critical moment in the main plot. Characters are really given life in the sub-plots of the story-without subs,you never really get to know the person(s) whom you are following.

I would imagine that the main plot is the story that the writer spends the most time on and that you are following more closely while the sub plot is something else that is going on in the story that is less important.

a sub plot is like an additional story that is going on....in many cases the sub plot cannot be cut b/c somehow it links to the main plot and if it could be cut the author wouldnt have put it in.
