If it is something physical, or a process, then patenting is the way. However, it can be expensive. The first thing that must be done is that existing patents must be searched in order to show that your idea is unique. If the idea is truly original and useful, big companies may still try to steal it. In this case you would have to fight them in court. Other companies may try to by the rights of the patent from you. That is what happened to the patents for water powered cars.
If it is a document of some kind, it would only need to be copyrighted. Put one copy in an envelope, post it to bank or solicitor (so it has postmark), and let it be kept in a safe until and unless it is challenged.
I recommend you contact your patent office for a guide, and you consider using an agent. It will cost you though.

Contact the U.S. PATENT Office! Just search the computer. Even if you do not know the direct address to what you are looking for put in the keywords, and the computer will do the rest. Good Luck

The word you want to use it's PATENT.
Patents Office USA
I think not sure the website goes like this:
www.uspatents.gov
In order to make your idea real, you need to find a developer, AFTER you get your patent.
