This is the rule of this website. If Yahoo! takes away 5 points for asking a question, it gives u 3 points back if u choose the best answer urself. Thus In reality u lose only 2 points and this rule of Yahoo! motivates u to choose ur best answer also because asker is always best judge.
When people vote for the best answers, It has been noticed they bother more for their own points than bothering for accuracy of the answer. Thus giving u three points back while choosing the best answer urself reduces the misuse of voting also.
Had Yahoo! not been taking 5 points for asking. It is possible that people may post dumb questions more like who came first " Hen or Egg". Thus this rule reduces the probability of dumb questions also.
I feel this is a good rule and it should continue.
