The sport of softball is similar to baseball, but there are a few major differences. There are two types of softball, fast-pitch and slow-pitch. A softball is much larger than a baseball. A fast-pitch softball is four inches in diameter and a slow-pitch softball is five inches in diameter. There are ten players in softball, where baseball has nine. Softball has one more outfielder. The pitcher stands in a circle that is directly in the middle of the four bases.
The pitcher actually tosses the ball underhand and in many leagues the ball must go above six feet during the arc of the toss but cross the plate in the strike zone. The catcher stands behind home plate but in slow-pitch they do not usually wear pads or facemask. The infield is the same as baseball, with a first, second and third baseman and a shortstop. The outfield has a left and a right fielder, but unlike baseball, which has one center fielder, there are two center fielders called right and left center.
Softball players use an aluminum bat, which is thinner and lighter than a baseball bat. The order in which the players bat is called the batting lineup. All ten players have to bat, but some leagues allow pinch hitters after each player has batted once. The first person to bat is called the leadoff hitter. Generally this is one of the more consistent hitters or fastest runners to improve the teams chances early in the game.
The fourth person in the lineup is called the cleanup hitter. They are the more powerful hitters on the team and the idea is that some of the first three batters should be on base for the cleanup hitter to come and hit a powerful enough shot for them to run home. The rest of batting order decreases in skill to the worst hitter who is at the bottom of the order. When all the players have hit, the lineup returns to the top of the order and the leadoff hitter who starts the order all over again.

In fast pitch, they do an underhand windup and then you try to hit it. In slow pitch, they don't do a windup, they just throw it really slow underhand and then you try to hit it. Besides the pitching aspect of the game, it is the same as baseball.
