Unless you are heading someplace you can't get via the subway (MBTA), I wouldn't get a car.

Brutal traffic, lousy parking choices AND extortionary prices, confusing road layouts (most roads are one way), no gas stations, poor signage... It is a disaster for visitors.

That being said, enjoy your visit. Boston is really one of the GREAT walking cities.

Do not take a car. In Boston you can get practically anywhere within I'd say an hour, hour and half tops if you use the metro, which costs only $1.25 per person, per ride. But one ride can get you anywhere. Also, much of Boston is beautiful just to walk around and enjoy. It is designed to be able to walk anywhere. I just moved out here for the summer and I have no car and I can always get around. Like everyone else said, parking is very expensive, not to mention if you do ever find a parking spot, you'll have to walk half a mile anywhere from where you parked. Plus Boston people drive like idiots. Its just not worth it to take a car.

If you're just staying in downtown Boston, you definitely do not need a car. It is ridiculously expensive to park a car, plus the rental and other expenses. Boston is extremely difficult to navigate by car. Even if you take taxis it will be cheaper than renting a car and the subway system, as much as people here complain about it, is fairly easy (and definitely cheap). Plus if you are staying downtown it's also a very walkable city. The airport is near downtown also.

If you're staying right down town then you won't need a car, it would just be more trouble and money than it's worth. Just take the T everywhere you go, or even a taxi. You'll put out a little bit of money there, but parking is almost impossible in the city and expensive as well! So you might end up paying about $25 a day in parking, plus the price of your rental. . . .

probably not because boston's transformational system is really good. the only reason that you would need a car is if you want to go far our of boston, to the west or something, and even then there are transformational systems available. plus boston's roads are CRAZY, and for drivers that dont know them, its not a good idea to be driving. even people who live in the city have a hard time driving around. so i wouldnt get a rental car because the transportation is affordable and reliable. have fun on your trip!

probably not.

Boston has a wonderful transportation system that runs until midnight, and parking is very expensive.

IF you can find a parking space. Generally you have to settle for a parking garage.

Cost and convenience aside, Boston is notorious for its confusing layout, crooked streets, poor road conditions and so on. Unlike other modern cities that are more of a "grid" Boston is a confusing pretzel-like web for most visitors.

Anyway, Boston is one of the most historic cities in the nation, and youre bound to find a lot more interesting things by walking. Personally, I find that walking and taking a bus/subway is actually faster than driving the distance yourself.

If you really don't need to have one I wouldn't waste the money. The MBTA train system is good and it takes you lots of places. It's Fairly inexpensive also compaired to the headache of trying to park in Boston. Make sure you go to the North End for wonderful Italian food and hit the museums and the aquarium if you have time.

Keep your car at home. Boston is a great walkable city. If not ...The MBTA or taxi service is a great way to get from place to place. Get a map of BOSTON and print out an MBTA schedule....Enjoy Boston

If you take your car, your looking at lousy traffic delays, tunnel closings, BIG DIG detours and expensive parking garages.
