the same thing happens to my friend i've gone through 5 pairs of headphones and yes of course i listen to my music loud, but usually my headphones will last a month or so and then stop working on 1 side, with my ipod they last a couple of weeks and go completely dead, i can't use them ever again on anything, why is this? is that normal?

The wonders of modern manufacturing techniques allow for the electrical wires inside your headsets to be made extremely small. This in turn keeps the weight & bulk to a minimum. Unfortunately, a major drawback is (generally) the smaller something is made the less strength it has. For example, think of the outcome of a Hummer colliiding with a Yugo. A closer example would be the strength of a thread vs the strength of a rope. Your experience is more common than you think. The reality is that although not mentioned by manufacturers; headsets, earbuds, and the like are actually quite fragile. They do not withstand repeated bends, twists, or tugs for very long before they fail. The only way to prolong their life is to handle them with extreme care - something most people don't want to bother with. Lastly, for the good news ! You can listen to your music as loud as you want as the speakers in your headsets are far more durable than your eardrums - you will go deaf before they fail !

The best part of ipod experiance can be obtained with the usage of hearphones that come with ipod. There are technical details to this.

My only guess is that there is a mismatch (impedence) between the ipod output and the hearphones you use. May be because of this mismatch, the current going into the hearphones damage them. There is also a high possibility that this can also affect ipod's output port.

In the past i have used hearphones from Philips, Panasonic, senheisser without any problems. The best quality of sound always came from using ipod's hearphones.
