(With apologies to Mel Brooks and his Blazing Saddles.)

Ever see yourself as just a pawn (Pawns are usually associated with being victims)? How often do you feel this way?

Where do you see yourself most often in the game of life? As a pawn? A knight? Perhaps a bishop or a rook?

How often does your perception of yourself as a player change? And how often do you see yourself in multiple rolls? Running through the gauntlet, trying to balance the many roles you’re playing.

And no points for you if you only see yourself as either a king or queen?

I think a chessboard is a wonderful metaphor for life. It is one that I brood over constantly and I always fit the role of a pawn.

However, I don't really see myself as a victim. I'm more of a finger attached to a body. A digit in a position to aid the whole even though I am merely a small part.

I am underestimated, yet I can be used to pull off the most awe-inspiring moves. And if I'm lucky, when my journey is through... I can become something greater.

I'm not so sure to make an anology with game play as the purpose of life is an accurate metaphor, even though it has been called "the game of life" for at least as long as I have been walking the planet.

Life becomes a contest only when we make it so. I have not participated in the game,so, at least to this point, my perception of myself hasn't changed. I do one thing each morning when I wake and never do the other: I thank God for giving me another day. I never have to look at my drivers license to see who I am or to know what I am.

Even in retrospect I can't find a whole lot I would change, except dodge a little ill health here and there. But, there were some things that I should have done when presented an opportunity to do so.

Furthermore, having chosen the game of chess as a comparator, the two most powerful pieces have been eliminated from the competition. Isn't that a bit like trying to play baseball without a ball and bat? In addition, are there not those who may consider themselves to be the disallowed players of the game? I think for an honest self appraisal, when using a game for an anology, one should work within the parameters of the rules of that game. In this instance the rules of the game have been bent, or outside the structure of the game. Life is not so. When involved with the sometimes arduous task of playing the game of life, the reality is, we don't get to change the rules. For that reason, we are subordinate, from time to time, to those "kings and queens," who actually exist in our life as those who are more powerful or those whom we have empowered.

So, tell me, which game piece do you think I should be?

PAWN IF GIVEN A CHANCE IT CAN TURN INTO A QUEEN! IF A PAWN IS PROTECTED BY THE QUEEN, ROOK AND THE KNIGHT IT CAN TURN INTO A QUEEN!

IF YOU GET HELP ALONG THE WAY PERHAPS YOU CAN BECOME POWERFUL TOO.

I LIKE TO BE A PAWN.....YOU SACRIFICE ...YOU HAVE A TINY BIT OF A CHANCE TO BE A QUEEN....!!!

OF ALL THE OTHER PIECES A PAWN CAN BE JUST AS POWERFUL!
