Oh my god. I live abroad and encounter many, many people from around the world. Most of the people I work with are from the UK or commonwealth countries. Believe me, they get just as offended, yet they don't even recognize it. It's actually quite funny. They are constantly talking about the US and we are expected to suck it up, which sometimes we do and sometimes we don't, but when someone says the slightest thing negative about their country, which rarely happens because everyone is usually focused on talking about the US and the Americans are too caught up in their own country to care about any other country, these peoples lips get all tight and they get all ruffled. Yet, in the next turn they will say something very similar to what you've just said.
As for puritanical, I have to say the most puritanical people I've met are from New Zealand. Don't get me wrong, I love Kiwis, but they are surprisingly puritanical.

You really need to be more specific to communicate clearly. What, in particular are you complaining about? Not all USA citizens are "puritanical" so you're really making a lot of generalizations here.

using kangaroos to college vs. calling an entire u . s . fat specifically are 2 assorted issues. One is a humorous tale and the different is a hateful insult. possibly that's why we get offend it.
