Whenever we are unconciously afraid of failure, our mind will come up with a lot of weird and interesting defence mechanisms to placate our disappointments. For example in your case, you are probably afraid of a real bad result on your exams. So unconciously you come up with silly ways to avoid studying for this exam. Perhaps preparing yourself with the perfect excuse for failing later on. In fact, you should be making iit easier for yourself to study right now.
When you think about it, this is exactly what the problem is. Because you can not picture yourself in a successful situation, your confusion sends you down these unconcious avenues of failure. So right now, you are forcing yourself to remain stressed, thus you are certainly unable to focus on the task at hand, which is to study. Hence you are setting yourself for a sure-shot failure. Just so that, later on, you can say to yourself, "See that, told you so! I am a loser! Good thing I didnt bother to study. I was going to fail anyway."
So how do you get around this situation?
Its very simple. You sit down in a confortable place, close your eyes, and take about 10 deep breaths. No matter how silly this may seem to you right now, but just tell yourself to, "relax" and as you do, you will feel your body go limp. You might even become sleepy. Avoid falling asleep. Instead you should remain focused only on one thing. And that one thing is to visualize yourself getting a straight "A" on this exam. You should imagine (No matter how stupid this may sound), to be enjoying the benefit of this achievement. You should be able to fantacise as much as you want about this. Just imagine holding your result card in your hand and the great big smile on your face. You should imagine how that day would be like for you, when you get this A on your exam. Things you are going to do to celebrate your success. You should feel absolutely comfortable with this vision. When you can do this, you will find yourself happliy being drawn to studying for this exam. You will be amazed how easy and enjoyable it really is. The catch to all of this is very simple.
Unless you are completely relaxed, you can not succeed. Its the law of nature. If you are stressed, you are bound to fail.
Even a journey of a 1,000 miles starts with the first step. Your job is only to make it easy for your body to take that first step. The law of motion will do the rest. Trust me on this.

My wife has a final exam Tuesday, and she has been studying most of the day today, and she plans on the same tomorrow.

anyways, i often experience like this... it's as if i want something else to do rather than study... especially i'm facing the computer.
i'd best recommend you to adjust your schedule, practice self-discipline, coz that's what i did to manage my time...
onething, enjoy while studying, don't think of it as a boring stuff yet try to experiment some things that might interest you to it. just like, writing while studying, repeating what you have studied through jotting important details while scanning at your notes...
you can also do dovetailing: watching tv while glancing at notes, etc...
find out activities that will make you want and enjoy studying!

Don't panic we all get like this. In my experience I found if i sang my study notes onto a recorder. I didn't mind studying i sing over a favourite tune and it sticks in my head. Wake up in morning your humming and remembering your notes for the days. Worked for me has worked for my family and friends.
