Why is your sideways hat so stereotypical? I guess if dressing nice, driving a nice car, having a lot of friends and making good grades is the stereotype, I'll go ahead and be a stereotypical prep.

Why are thugs so stereotypical, or why are goths so stereotypical, or why are drama dorks/band so stereotypical, why are jocks/skaters/wiggers/cheerleaders/chess nerds/gaming-computer geeks...did I leave out any stereotypical HS social group...so stereotypical?

We socialize with people who are like ourselves because that is what is comfortable. If you get a group of people together that share similar interests then you are creating a stereotype....the majority of that group show similar characteristics that can define and set that group apart from the rest.

The whole point is to look serious and reliable; prep is for preparatory school, meaning preparing to go to an Ivy League college.

Conformity and predictability is the key.
