There were many religions in Rome at the time of the transition from the Republic to the Empire. That was before the monotheistic religion that shortly thereafter swept through Europe made multi-religious tolerance immoral. The Pagans of classical Rome excelled at peaceful coexistence of different sects. Hellenistic Roman religion (e.g., the worship of Olympianized indigenous Italian gods such as Jupiter in his multiple aspects, etc.) was the dominant mode of these diverse religions. Most people accepted that the gods of other cultures were all real, although one's own god was understood as the dominant or most powerful one in the pantheon.
