they offer structure and control in an age where there seems to be no structure, control, or respect for authority.
Those attracted to cults also are duped into believing that those in the cult actually care about them (and, initially, the cult will seem to show real love and concern for them, up til the time they have been brainwashed and are now a source of cheap labor (or free labor) to help the cult and it's leader bring in and raise more free money while spreading lies about what is true and how to get to heaven).
They also (if they are a pseudo-Christian cult) will have some obvious marks: they deny the deity of Christ and/or they deny the doctrine of the Trinity, and also, their leader (the leader of the cult) claims some special "revelation" that makes him [and the cult] the only person/group on the earth with the real message of truth).
Lots of groups do this, the Mormons, the Jehovah's Witnesses, the Moonies, the Way International, etc.
The first part (the structure and rules) is also what draws westerners to Islam, in fact. It's the fact that they see something that seems to offer structure, concrete rules, etc, in an age when nobody [in the West] seems to think anything is worth committing your life to, or worth dying for
. . and they aren't told the truth upfront about how evil the belief system is [Islam] and that it requires that they committ themselves to killing innocents in order to earn heaven.

cults are generally for weak people who like being manipulated
followers not leaders
people who are not strong or confident enough to run their own
lives which in the USA mean about 30% of the population
and rising
since most young people aren't willing to take responsibility for anything

Charismatic leaders....people so dramatic, educated, charming, born leaders who spark fire in the minds of those less educated. Of course, these people are usually mentally unstable, but they are believable.
Ex. Hitler, David Koresh, Charles Manson....
