Successively, the Sumerians, Persians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and a good number of others never thought that anything good would come from the North European barbarians. This view remained intact up to almost 600 years ago. In a mere 400 years the North Europeans virtually conquered the World.

If you had a time machine to travel back and tell that to the ancient super powers you would probably get similar answers that some post here now. Thing however is, that the power of the Western countries is declining. Asia and South America are on the rise. They may discover Africa as a consumer market and a trade partner, rather than a source of cheap resources. After that the chances for the unexpected to happen will grow incrementally.

The unexpected has great chances of happening for the main reason that hardly anyone thinks about it, let alone stopping it. I can only hope that by the time the now Third World rises out of all the shadows the people then speak of a one world, rather than a divided one, for whichever stupidity rationalized.

It will happen at the exact time that Western/Modern investors see Africa and the other third world nations as "undeveloped markets".

Sadly, donations will not work here, and are certainly not a fix. In fact, they are probably going against the grain in that they are giving the people in these countries a "crutch" to lean on. Humanitarianism is a good idea, but unfortunately, when youre used to handouts, theres no motivation to change anything.

But, back to my point. Investment is what will raise the standard of living in these countries. All it takes is one company to start the flood.

Suppose one company looks at an African country and says, "gee, theres a pretty decent market for tough vehicles like jeeps over there. Theres plenty of people to work in a factory, and with a bit of foreign investment, we can make the cars affordable enough for at least some of the population to buy"

So they set up a factory, and employ a few hundred workers. Those workers now have reliable jobs, steady incomes, and are able to pay for needed things for their families, like food.

Other companies see this... perhaps a food chain. They see the demand for food, and people with a paycheck, and plop.. now theres a factory and a food store and soon other things pop up as well--providing more jobs, and more potential buyers.

Sad as it is, consumerism is the ONLY permanant solution to the quagmire of poverty these unfortunate people find themselves in. But. this will benefit everyone. The additional sales made by these companies will expand commerce around the globe and reach into all markets.

People that have jobs, a steady paycheck, and can provide for a decent family life are generally happy people. This is why most terrorists and insurgents come invariably from poor nations. Employed people are content people. Poor people are frustrated, depressed, and lacking hope, and find no reason NOT to kill their fellow countrymen and wage war on others.

I can't see it happening any time soon. It is possible that if they can control corruption which exists in every country but seems to be like breathing in some African countries, they might join the developing world. I would like to see that happen, but I'm not holding my breath.

My husband is from a stable country in West Africa. It is low on the list of corrupt countries, but I don't see that it has a chance in h*ll of becoming a first world country, and very little chance of becoming a developing country. It's very sad.

Most of those countries have collapsed , it too late.
Maybe a country like Congo , because it has great wealth, but then they need a great leader, because the country is very divided

Nothing is impossible, the Govt. of that country should be democratic i.e., people oriented, Rome was not build in a day. They should adopt good policy and don ask me what policy..?, what i mean is they should learn from others if they don know one. Thank you. Have a nice day

Unless something huge and unforeseeable happens, they will never catch up.

Too bad though. It's a tragedy that so many have to live in abject poverty.
