I'm 20 years old, I've been married a little more than a year. My periods have always been pretty regular, even more so now because I'm on birth control. My last period was from July 7-11th. It was a day later than it ever has been since I've been on birth control but I don't figure there's any problem there. Oh, I've been on birth control for probably about 2 years now. So anyways. The last three or four days I've had really dark brown discharge everytime I go to the bathroom & it's getting on my underwear too. It's not like a whole lot but it's noticable for me. At first I thought I must not have cleaned myself good enough because I had some diarrhea. But even after cleaning myself really well & then going to pee later, the tissue comes away from just wiping up front with all the really dark brown discharge. Has anyone had this before? Should I be worried? Is my system just cleaning out some gunk? Am I just having a little bleeding that's dark in between periods?

Should I take a trip to the doctor & have it treated? Also, I have noticed in the last few days as well, that every once in a while I get these cramps in my stomach & they are just like period cramps, just not as intense as usual. Thank you all in advance for your help & advice.

Well, now that I've read some answers, the thing about the birth control...hmmm. I do have pills like that BUT this month is the first time I've ever made a boo boo & didn't take 2 of them at all. The first one I accidentally just missed, I found it left in the pack after I was already a few days ahead of it, so I just threw it away. The second one, well, I found one of my pills just laying on the table one night & I had no idea when I left it there! I must have gotten ready to take it & then forgot, so because I didn't know when it was from, I just threw that one away too! I believe vacation messed me up cause I'd just gotten back from it! Maybe because I missed those two it screwed me up a little!

it's possible that you're experiencing breakthrough bleeding (spotting or bleeding during your active pills)..which means that the hormones you're getting from your BC may not be strong enough and that your doc may need to change you to another brand, especially if you're currently on a tri-phasic (such as ortho tri cyclen which has 3 strengths of active pills)...ask about switching to a monophasic (one strength all month) as this can reduce the chances of breakthrough bleeding. I wouldn't be alarmed...it's not abnormal to have this happen after being on the same pill for a decent length of time (have you been on the same one for the whole 2 years?). A change in your prescription should fix it if it is breakthrough bleeding- but you need to talk to your doc.

other possible causes could be infection or pregnancy, but I strongly feel it's related to your pill.

Well i know after a period you usually have a brownish discharge which is regular. being on birth control is weird because nothing is ever right on time, but when your in doubt check it out.

if you are having sex frequently that could be the culprit also. sex can cause infections, or tearing of the vaginal walls which could cause bleeding that would appear brown and light
