Many athletes have had their careers cut short because artificial turf is hard on their knees. The playing surface tends to be hard and unforgiving. From another point of view, it needs to be replaced from time to time, and is quite expensive.

It hurts more when you slide on it.

Just a tidbit of information if you didn't know: AstroTurf was so named because it was first used for the Houston Astros in the Astrodome!!

It would be dis-advantagious to replace it too often.
