Matonabbee (c. 1737-1782) was a Chipewyan hunter and leader. After his father died, Matonabbee spent some time living at Fort Prince of Wales where he learned to speak English.

He acted as a guide for Samuel Hearne during his exploration from 1770 to 1772.

After the death of many Chipewyans during a smallpox epidemic of 1782 and the defeat of Fort Prince of Wales by the French, Matonabbee became depressed and committed suicide. This is the only record of a Northern Indian ending his own life.

Motonabbee was an Indian guide who in 1771 along with a party of Indians escorted Samuel Hearn (who was reputed to be the first European explorer to have traveled to the mouth of the coppermine system)from Northan Manitoba, which in fact was lies as they had only traveled 40 miles to get to the coppermine, as they traveled downstream they came upon a family of Eskimo`s from the Inuit tribe who were sworn enemies of the Chipewyan`s, so they killed them as they slept, Samuel Hearn named the nearby rapid`s Bloody Falls because of the killing.
