I think that there is a very wide range in terms of competency. Some of us are fantastic, and some of us are pitiful at what we do.

Licensure isn't really about certifying who is good or bad, but just about having met minimum standards.

If you're looking for a psychologist, I would strongly suggest that you ask around and get multiple recommendations. Make certain that they are using modern assessmend and treatment methods. There is a lot of 1940's quackery out there....

good luck.

I think if you find a good Psychologists never let them go. They can really help you in life. Even if you don't think you need therapy it helps just to have some one who listens when you talk. Just being listened to and not openly judged no matter what you say is great. To be complemented and treated like you are important is also really great no matter who you are, even when you know the only reason this person is talking to you or listening is because they are paid to do so.

I think they are preforming a much needed service, and can be really nice people.

The most fun I ever had with a psychologist was the day I purposely refused to use any words of emotion with my dad's psychologist. When he asked questions like, "How does it make you feel?" My answer would always be, "like I need to..." He got frustrated and walked away.

in response to Doot's answer...ummmmmm, Psychologists can't prescribe meds.......

I agree that some are good some are bad. I went to one one that screwed me up worse. I went in there with minor depression. I was just a little sad, really. He had me convinced by the time that I found someone else that I had major depession, borderline personality disorder, OCD & was suicial. He was very into Freud's school of psychology, so he also tried to convince me everything I did was based on sex, and claimed I wanted to have sex with everyone, including my preacher!!!!! As someone else said, go with your gut. Run like hell if it feels wrong! You know yourself better than anyone. I am thankful I finally got the nerve and left that quack!

It depends on the psychologist. Some are helpful, some do much more damage than good. Some are beneficial for some and some not as much for others.

I think they are very manipulative, but I do have to honor their communication skills. They are able to use peripheral and nonverbal skills very well to study such an abstract field. I fully support their work, and I feel that it's an extremely important field. It not only teaches us the manners in which people think, but it also lends a hand to those of us who are in the field of education, as educating students is little more than a psychological game.

Assuming you mean clinical psychologists...

Some of them are very nice people who help a lot; some of them need to deal with their own issues, some of them should find a different line of work.

I think they all want to help.

1/3 help you get better. 1/3 you stay the same so you threw your money away for nothing and one third you are worse off when you left than when you went in. interview them and go with your gut. check references. and if they feel crazy run like hell. some of them need the couch for their own issues that they haven't dealt with. there isn't enough regulation in this industry.

oh, and if someone uses the word 'expert' they probably aren't. the only expert on you is you.

By the Way, just as an aside, i hate Dr. Phil.

I think they are only concerned with writing perscriptions and not doing their jobs properly. I think that so called "mental illness" like depression or nearly anything else they prescribe pills for ( some people are pegged as "too happy", can you believe that?) could be cured by being talked to, by being able to share their feelings. They lonely don't need Prozac. They just need someone to talk to.

I think in today society,we need more of them around!..the problem is,that they to expensive for the average earners,so they become unreachable to us...The true is that usually low income earners need more attendance from psychologists, coz life is much harder for people who can't afford to pay the bills!!..So please help those who really need help,by making psychologists less expensive!!...Thank you!!
