It helps to have a degree in Accounting, but the amount of school differs greatly. My wife got her CPA right after graduating college. The CPA Exam has multiple parts, so it takes some studying. CPAs these days can make pretty good money. Especially because of sarbanes-oxley. The demand is growing for good accountants. However, it's not exactly the most fun and entertaining job. In fact, my wife quit and went to culinary school to study pastries, which she found a lot more fulfilling.

You can be one in four years then take the board examination. Making decent money depends on your line of work, whether you are in private practice, teaching, employed by a private corporation or working for the government. When you do become one, avoid teaching or working for the government coz your options are so limited. The pay is low and you can't do anything about it. Some governments prohibit their CPA employees from doing private work part time so you will have to be content with what you are receiving like the salary of a clerk outside.
If you like working indoors and having your calculator, pencil and worksheets as companions, its the job for you.

My mom is a part time one and it makes pretty good money. She gets $22 an hour. She went to college for about 6 years too. I think you can go for shorter though. I like her as one because she goes to work when my siblings go to school and she gets off of work when they get done from school. It's very flexible time wise. She doesn't regret a minute of it either. She loves what she does and it's fun to her. The only busy time is Tax season when she works till 3 or 4 a.m. to get everything done. They are extremely busy but after that everything is usually pretty laid back.
