My daughter is 5 a half weeks old, we just had a check-up and she is very healthy. My problem is that the Dr. said she has a little nasal congestion, she suggested that we put salt water up her nose... I can't do that... any other ideas. She has been having trouble sleeping and breastfeeding, yes I told Dr.

How about squirting your milk up her nose. Make it a game, when she stops nursing, just spray a little in the general direction. Some will make it up there. Human milk has the same mineral balance as saline, plus it's antiviral and antibacterial so it will help even more.

He probably suggested mixing salt and water b/c he figured you had both those things at home, but it's the same if you buy nose spray. That little noses one is great b/c you can either turn the bottle upside down and drop a few drops in each nostril, or you can shake the bottle up, hold it upright, and spray some into each nostril (though her nose is still awfully tiny, so be careful!). Don't overuse the nose bulb syringe, it can have a rebound effect by drying her nose out too much or irritating her nasal passages. Use a vaporizor/humidifier in the rooms where she is, especially when she's sleeping and eating. And put some of the Vicks liquid vaporizor stuff into it. Or you can now buy those nifty little refillable things you plug into the wall that act like a vaporizor, if you don't have one. Keep her propped up at all times.

You can try Q tips to clean the nose and they also have medicine for in baby drops for nasal congestion I believe it is called little fevers you could try that...mine is 9 months old now but had the same problem at about the same age and then got the flu a couple months later and was instructed by the doctor to give the little fever stuff and it worked good...if its really bad give the full dose and if its not too bad give half a dose.

Did the doctor mention the saline solution you can buy at the drug store for stuffy noses of children? It is safe for your baby and will help clear the nasal passage. Sometimes their little noses get stuffy from dryness and this will help solve that situation. It comes in a little bottle and you place at the nostril and give a tiny squeeze or use as a drop by holding the bottle upside down. Unless your doctor has told you to use something else. It is frustrating for baby to feed/sleep while having a stuffy nose. It is your job as mom to help her feel better. There will be lots of times when you will not want to do something that you have to do to help your child while she grows. You can do it! Good Luck! :)

My new baby has the same problem, so we went out and bought a product called "Little Noses", it's kind of messy but does help. Believe it or not the baby only notices it for a quick second. Also, put a humidifier next to her bed, those things work wonders.
I told our doctor that's what we have been doing for our baby and she said we are doing things just right.
If it's your first baby, I can understand you not wanting to put things in her nose, but think about her discomfort over yours. She will sleep and breastfeed so much better and that in the long run will be better for you as well.
Congratulations on your new baby.
As for the answer above mine, (just noticed what they wrote)whatever you do, DO NOT spray the drops in her nose. It's too much pressure for her.

I sent my husband to WalMart one night b/c our daughter couldn't sleep with the nasal congestion. He came back with Baby Vicks (the vapor rub) and a vaporizer. They both worked like a charm and I didn't even know they made Baby Vicks. I didn't want to always put it directly on her chest so I would put it on the back/front of her clothes and you can use the nose syringe/sucker thing also before feedings or whenever. I am not sure if there is a age limit on the Baby vicks tho.

Edit* Found this link. BabyVicks is for children 3mths and older but you can still ask your pediatrician if it would be fine if you just put it on her clothes?

Listen to you doctor. Go to the drugstore and purchase "Baby Simply Saline." If you have trouble finding it, a pharmacist working the counter can get it for you. It is non-habit forming, doesn't burn or sting. I used it on my daughter when she was smaller. I even tried shooting it up my nose, and it didn't bother me at all. It really moisturizes their little delicate nasal passages. Just make sure you lay your little on to the side as your shoot it up her nose, so that the mucous drains out the other nostril.

Try triamninc vapo patches to keep the whole house from smelling like vapo..Or the pediacare vapo plug ins they are great...On the patches they can be found beside the baby tylenol and other triaminic products..For a baby that small cut it in half as they are a little pricey..and put it on the outside of her sleeper...or inside if she pulls em off...

Use the saline nasal spray and nasal aspirator (the nose sucky thing).
My daughter had the same problem, and while this wasn't "fun", it did work...
