"Personal statements" and "statements of purpose," are, for all practical purposes, the same thing. They both convey to graduate admissions committees the reasons you think you should be selected for admission.

In your statement of purpose, you should:

describe yourself, providing information that cannot be found on your transcript, being sure to demonstrate your particular suitability for the program in question

demonstrate familiarity with current methodologies, and articulate the intended focus of your study

mention the faculty with whom you hope to work, and state the reasons for your interest in these faculty

proofread!
proofread again!

(Statements with grammar and spelling errors go directly to the bottom of the pile, trust me.)

There are no "key words." Just write well, and write honestly.

Best wishes to you!
