If you have a legal copy of Windows you don't have anything to worry about.

If you have a bootlegged copy, well. good luck.

I perform a "Clean Install" sometimes because I desire to clean my registry; sometimes because I have a corrupt program; and sometimes due to a dumb move on my part, or another program that has corrupted itself, like Norton! The only way to clean the registry (the "Bible" of all computers, per se) is to "Clean Install". Whenever a clean install is performed, altho some prefer CDs to DL all their files, programs, etc., I use an external drive; and prior to the Clean Install unplug AND turn off the drive, for added "protection". WHENEVER a Clean Install is performed, and AFTER the clean install has completed itself, the following steps are REQUIRED in order to have an operating computer (and not necessarily in this order) - but this will DEFINITELY answer your question and give you a "belief system" in the Windows DLs and the "rumor" someone has allowed you to wonder if it is true, and the answer si DEFINITELY NOT!

After completing a clean install "I" perform these steps, in THIS ORDER and have NEVER LOST ANYTHING: (a) I go to my external drive, after plugging it in and turning it on. I take my files from "My Docs", "My Stationary", "My Fonts" and my Norton file, which contains the DLs for Norton to remove the "trial version" my computer came with, along with all "registry chips" that are not needed, and I bring them back to my "C Drive". After which, from knowledge I have rec'd from BOTH Norton AND Microsoft, I set up my Microsoft Office program, and obviously the internet to work; the go to the Microsoft site to have Microsoft "search" for the DLs needed (approximately 59 of them with a clean install; and a time encompassing approximately 10 hours (on dial up) to DL ALL of the "mandatory & required DLs, security bulletins, patches, and most important, the SP2, the "patch" or DL that came out soon after Office 2003, to "cure" all the "bugs" (not viruses, spam, etc. - but "goofs" or "technical errors" that Microsoft discovered AFTER distribution of Office 2003, ... and AFTER DL'g ALL those "Microsoft, Office, Windows, Excel, Powerpoint and other DLs for the SECURITY of your computer, THEN, again pursuant to BOTH Norton & Microsoft, THEN and only THEN DO I DL my "internet security". I have ALWAYS used the "automatically DL" link in the Security System of the Control panel, instructing my computer to DL all recommended Microsoft DLs at 3AM ea morning if needed, and NEVER have I EVER lost ANYTHING due to a Microsoft DL and NEW UPDATE - NOT EVER!!

I do not know WHO told you this - but is is FALSE, VERY INCORRECT, and if you think about it - IF it WERE TRUE, Microsoft would not be in business very long!! I do not know a computer user out ther, including law firms, corporations, etc., that would continue using a progpram that when updates are allowed, would erase files - and wipe out a hard drive!? Can you imagine the chaos this would cause ... a law firm?? YIKES! I don't even want to think about it (smile)! ... Can you tell - I'm a legal secretary?! Trust me on this - there is NO WAY this will EVER HAPPEN and IF you did LOOSE PROGRAMS, it is NOT from Microsoft or Updating Microsoft DLs - if this would happen to YOU, I would strongly suggest you clean, scan, use Adaware, Spybot, DL the new Windows Beta Antivirus spyware that Microsoft now has available as a DL, etc. - as if you would begin loosing programs, you have another problem in your computer ... but if this would be the case, again - the CLEAN INSTALL is the ONLY WAY to get any computer back to "manufacturer specs" thus cleaning our the hard drive completely! God Bless - and I hope and pray this gives you the assurance, insurance and belief you need to NEVER DOUBT A MICROSOFT DOWNLOAD!!! And too, if you ever run into problems, CALL MICROSOFT on their 800 number ... that's what the techs are there for!!
800-936-5700 - God Bless - I hope this helps you and gives you "faith" in your Microsoft - as whoever told you this is certainly not even "close" to being a "computer user" much less a "geek" in any stretch of the imagination and should never be passing on "gossip" like this ... goodness gracious!

Ummmmmmmmm, No. Windows updates are necessary for your operating system. Some updates help against viruses and hackers. Microsoft does not update your computer with viruses. Who on earth told you that?
