Well, hundreds of years ago, people felt that a king/queen or royalty was important. Some people led their countries very well, so people loved them. Others, on the other hand, seemed like they were mad, and often didn't last very long. Despite that however, some people felt that their leaders shouldn't have absolute power, and tried to limit them, such as the Magna Carta in England.
Then as the 17th century arrived, nobility became less important overall, as the regular people began to realize they could be in charge of their destinies to an extent. Some went so far as to overthrow their leader (such as in the French Revolution, or even American Revolution). More events like this would happen as the common people tried to take charge of their own lives, such as the Communist Revolution in Russia in 1917 overthrowing their Tsar and replacing it with a society which on paper was supposed to treat everyone equally (and if you study it, you can see how well that turned out).
Nobility increasingly became less important overall to people. At this point, it's pretty much just a name, and some people just like that tradition of having a queen/king, but they don't really rule anymore (as they have an elected body of representatives that largely do the lawmaking and what not). There are exceptions (such as North Korea), but for the most part, anyone with a royalty title is pretty much just a figurehead title at this point.
Of course, I'm generalizing and simplyifing a lot of stuff, but you can sort of see what happened.

Without a monarch, the British government would be rather reminiscent of that travesty of a system in the United States. The Queen serves as the last true balance of power in our society. Yes she is silent concerning politics, but is that last residual respect and power that is associated with the crown that keeps, our MP's & PM's in check.

the queen's function is to establish diplomatic friendly relatioships with other heads of state. she's like an ambassador, only for a much longer period of time. and, yes she does. she makes sure there's a balance between the two parties in the commons, she makes sure that there's a consistent policy being led, no matter how many governments happen.

A monarch, whether king or queen, stands as a living symbol of the people over which he/she has governance. In some societies this is important to national identity.

Because she is on top of a pile of deluded bootlickers who are glad to be her subjects - that is subjugated.
I think is some sort of social masochism for people with poor self-image.
