If you have a certain area you are supposed to decorate, then use the cards for the "shuffle" theme. Maybe have one with the picture of a kid-- excuse me, teen-- on it with an open-mouthed overwhelmed look. Then have that card starting to get mixed into the rest of the deck (regular cards).

You could try the get-to-know-you game to break the ice:
*Everyone sits in a circle
*The first person says his or her first name and the name of a certain type of thing that the person likes (food, animal, whatever theme you say) that begins with the same first letter of the person's name.
*This continues one at a time all the way around the circle, each person repeating what the first person said, then the second, and so on, until the last person has to repeat everyone's name and favorite thing.

As far as doing anything else, I think the other people are right. Unless you are at church camp or youth group, games and activities tend to be frowned upon by kids that age.

Most probably won't care, but there will be some -- the smart ones-- who notice and appreciate your decorations as they relate to your theme.

Good luck and have fun!

Maybe you could try to use the shuffle idea for them to try new things such as different clubs, sports, activities or to not get locked into one group or perception of what they are supposed to be or act like--such as cliques. You could use the card game theme to teach them "tricks" to survival in high school like the best foods to get at lunch, best times to go to the bathroom, hangouts to avoid, how to best interact with teachers and so on.

The more that they know about what to expect and how to "survive" the less nervous they will be. Also, the more people that they can meet and the more involved they can get, the more they will enjoy their time in high school.

Some times to break the ice is to tell something about yourself. Take 12-15 cards out of a deck of cards that are numeric (not the Kings or Aces). Hand each person a card and have a list of all the cards given out. Then tell the people that they have to say that many things about themselves. Ex. someone draws a two, they have to say two things about themselves. Maybe throw the joker in there and have that be a prize winner. Good luck!

the 1st 2 posters were a little harsh, but they told a harsh truth.

I still remember freshman year...long time ago. I would not have appreciated the cards/decorating/games. Also--and more important--it truly would have been misleading considering the tough road that followed, like poster #1 kind of indicated.

Young folks don't need to be mislead...they need real preparation...maybe sometimes martial arts and self defense, in some schools. It's not a pretty thing. But it's true. I do love your positive attitude and helpful spirit, however.

Have each person write down 2 questions that they would ask when wanting to get to know a person better. NOT WHAT'S YOUR NAME OR WHERE DO YOU LIVE but interesting ones like what is your favourite food, movie, sport.
Have them move around the room to get to each person.
Give them time to speak to each person in the group and write down the person's name and the answers to the questions.
The must speak to each person in the group.

When they are finished, ask one of the student's to stand. Have the rest of the class tell you about that student. This way each student has spoken to every student in the group and the shy ones do not have to stand and tell you about themselves.

This icebreakers works really well and should take about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Here's a suggestion. High school students don't care about that crap. Just show them where everything is, and then they can get out of that school as soon as possible. They're not in kindergarten for Christ's sake.

I'd suggest, being the senior that I am, do a labyrinth theme, because it symbolizes being lost, but finding your way.
