Deserts are places on earth that are characterized by little vegetation and rain. They are made up of sand or rocks and gravel. Deserts cover about one-fifth of all the land in the world. Most deserts lie along the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn, imaginary lines that lie north and south of the equator.

Oases are parts of the desert where plants grow and water is almost always available. An oasis is formed by a pool of water trapped between layers of rock beneath the desert floor. The regular water in an oasis allows people to settle in the desert and even grow crops.

Some deserts are named and nicknamed things like Death Valley, "the Empty Quarter," and "the Place from Where There is No Return" because of the lack of water there

There are some plants that are able to survive in the desert. They may have to go without fresh water for over a year! They also have to adjust to very hot days and very cold nights. Some plants have very long roots which grow in to the ground to reach underground water sources.

Some suck up as much water as they can during the rain and save it in their stems and leaves. Some store the food and water underground in thick roots.

THE QUATAR DEPRESSION(i believe it is called)in the saharran desert is below sea level with the mediterranean sea and ...water seeks it's lowest course!!!the mediterranean sea has also been "DRY" 17 TIMES when the mountains comprising the"PILLARS OR HERCULES"in it's western entrance rose GEOLOGICALLY or fell prey to subsidence!!!!THERE WERE PROBABLLY GREAT CITIES AND CULTURES WIPED-OUT IN EVERY INSTANCE that are totally unknown and unrecorded today at the bottom of it's muddy plains!!!!!the northern sahara was ,also, fertile and forested in very recent GEOLOGIC times....the Hoggar region has "rock art" effigies of forest and savannah animals drawn in very sophisticated terms by hunter-gathering tribal members!!!rivers once flowed there and there are many "GREAT AQUIFERS" beneath the SAND OF THE SAHARAN WASTES today with very pure water millions of years old!!THERE ARE ALSO GREAT CITIES WHICH ARE PERIODICALLY SHED OF SAND which were once in fertile and viable farming regions during the "RECENT HISTORY" OF MAN!!!DEFORESTATION,OVERGRAZING AND "WEALTH VALUE HERDS"OF CATTLE AND (most especially)GOATS that the land could not sustain,MARCHING BARCANS OF SAND...ALL OF THESE THINGS LEAD TO THE VERY FORMATION OF THE GREAT SAHARAN DERT!!substrata of impermeable rock and stone can trap water and retain it in pockets; or on long faulting subsurface ridges or volcanic dikes water can collect and percolate ,without exit, to the surface!!! any incidence of water is then used by migrating birds who also pass seeds with their droppings which will grow at the waters edge forming "an oasis"!!depending on the incidence of and the amount of water, these "oasis" can be artificially expanded and nourtured and extended organically to a surrounding area!!!encroachment of "sands"can be stopped by strategically planting "breaks" of trees!!Iran has shown that accassia TREES planted under a "crust" of artificially sprayed oil will bloom and root ,holding the soil and build up leafmatter if left "unhampered" by grazing perniciously by goats!!!!!!
