You might try small lizards or frogs, roaches, crickets, stuff like that. If your snake doesn't eat them soon after you put the critters in, take them out, they could have something that would be harmful. Keep notes on which things s/he likes.

Try some other small critters also. I think King snakes will eat small eggs. Like from doves and cardinals and other snakes. Not sure about that. Try looking on the Internet. I'm sure you could find something about King snakes.

You *could* feed your kingsnake small lizards or gerbils but why do it? They are often more expensive or more difficult to come by than frozen/thawed mice and if your snake gets used to them it may be very diffeicult to get him/her back to eating mice.

Your snake won't get bored eating the same food, just feed it what is best for it in the long term, that's mice.

By the way, *don't* try feeding it insects of any sort, theey are not good for kingsnakes (or indeed virtually any type of snake currently kept in captivity).

Please see the links below in 'sources' for more information about caring for Kingsnakes. Also there are several good books listed on amazon.com on kingsnakes. Have a look at this link if you are interested :)

For a California kingsnake the only thing you should be feeding him is mice or rat pups. Kingsnakes will not eat insects. Some people feed them lizards and other snakes but I wouldn't recommend that because you can easily pass disease from one reptile to another. Just stick with the mice. You can buy frozen mice on line at http://www.rodentpro.com They have good prices on bulk mice. You just have to thaw them out in a cup of hot tap water before you feed them to your snake.

I had a regular California King snake once. If you don't want to feed it mice, smaller snakes can be fed insects like crickets and grasshoppers. You just have to feed them more often. Try asking a reptile shop owner for sure, but I used to go catch crickets and grasshoppers when they were in season, and the snake acted as if it were a treat.

King Snakes are not insect eaters. Your best bet for food is pre-killed mice/rats, chicks. I wouldn't try feeding your snake another snake, unless you have access to lots of other snakes to use as food. Kings are snake eaters by nature & once they get a taste, they will often refuse to eat anything else. You can trick them sometimes by using a product called Lizard Maker. You place a drop of this liquid on a mouse/rat etc. & the snake will eat it thinking it's another reptile, their favorite food.

Just mice and maybe baby rats, never feed anything bigger then the widest part of the snakes body and be sure to feed prekilled it is safer for the snake.

IF YOU ARE ALREADY FEEDING YOUR SNAKE MICE DONT CHANGE IT. BUT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IDEAS BECAUSE YOU ARE GETTING ONE...
THE PREVIOUS ANSWERE IS RIGHT. CHICKS DUCKS AND SO ON... IN FACT THIS IS CHEAPER TO DO BECAUSE AT THE FEED STORES YOU CAN GET CHICKS FOR 2.00. NOT TO MENTION IT IS MORE REALISTIC TO THEIR NATURAL DIET IN THE WILD. BOAS AND PYTHONS ARE MOSTLY ARBOREAL SNAKES AND WHAT IS USUALLY IN THE TREES? BIRDS... MAKES MORE SENSE.

You may be able to feed him eggs, gerbils, or even frozen mice. Sounds like you may be squirmish. Our local pet shop has a nile moniter. I bought it a mouse once, but it made me squimish when he ate it. My lizard needs a pinkie ocasionally, but i just take him to pet shop. They give her one, I pay for it and take her back home packed with her calcium she really needs.
