I don't think we can only point this at African Americans, since as a trend this seems to be prevalent in all throws of society. The under lying problem is in modern consumerism. We as a society have been programmed to spend, just as power and corruption consumed Tony Montana. The vision of the future that Martin and Malcolm saw is currently one if ideality. Our government says spend to be patriotic, when really we should be concerned with education, with welfare and social programs, with health care and the state. I urge you as a person of like mind to question these principals (which you have already begun) and to challenge common current perspectives. Make America (and the rest of the world) open it's eyes.

Unfortunately our people have a weakness for the material posessions. We would do anything for fortune and fame. We resent the days of turning the other cheek. Now, we want to get what we want at all costs. Therefore Tony Montana is more appealing than Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. What doesn't help the situation any is that he was murdered in a hotel where he was having an affair.

Are there no role models for black teenagers? It used to be that there were several types, Dr King, who made great strides in the civil rights movement, actors such as Sidney Poitier, or sports figures such as Walter Payton. Who do they have to look up to now? I guess I'm not really answering the question, am I?
A few additional notes: Dr. King did have an affair. That does not detract from the work he did and was trying to do.
Whether they should or not, children are going to look up to sports figures and actors. It used to be that those people knew it, and acted accordingly. The ones I named were exceptional examples of hard work and good character. It seems that some of today's "role models" are out to show how bad they can be. Drugs, shootings, money, and power seem to be what they crave, and they really don't care how they get it or who they hurt.
I worked in a public school system for a number of years. If you are talking to seven year olds, they are not looking at scientists or authors. They only know what they are exposed to at home, which are actors and sports figures.
True education starts at home.

I have never walked through a black ghetto but i have walked through an Indian reseration where there is an equal amount of poverty and crime and hopelessness. for many of these people they see drugs or alcohol and crime as the only way out of the mess they live in. many of the kids have lost their moms and dads to drugs, prisons and death. the gangs are the only family they have.
'first one is free' the kid is hooked. deals to keep up a habit he gets hooked on after one hit.
To the Person who stated that Dr. Martin Luther King was killed at a hotel because he was there having an affair, I have attached the story that talks of his vicious slaying. There is no mention of a mistress. Only of his fearless peace march for justice.

There are no more Black Hero's. That's the problem with crime, failure in school, drugs etc, within the sub-culture. The ones (IE: Jessi Jac, Don Kin, etc..) who are around have been shown to be corrupt.
No one should use a sports figure or a singer/rapper to look up to. Anyone making millions a year is not a presenting a practical picture to emulate because most kids will never make it. It's OK to have your favorites but we all, black and white should be smarter then that.
Also, it's wrong for black and whites to not have hero's outside their race. Think about the people who are making the biggest differences in our world, the scientists, doctors, astronauts, research experts. Most of them don't drive around in overgrown cars or wear tons of gold or wear expensive clothes. They don't need to, they're light years from music and sports people. They're busy saving us from ourselves and more.
Those things don't make you any better that you are when you're born, they mean nothing. But those experts I speak of are making it all happen for the rest of us. Cancer will be cured by these people, the earth saved by these people, new planets to live on will be found by these people etc...
No rapper or rock star ever cured a disease. Most of them just promote bad English and violence...wow.... Go to NASA or your local university and meet a professor, He or she is the hero.
PS: MLK was killed because he wanted to go beyond civil rights. He wanted the end of corrupt government, freedom from poorness for blacks, whites and everyone else. He wanted true freedom and was a great person (My Grandfather knew him), he was having an affair, his own handlers admitted this. He was killed because the government feared him, just like JFK and Marilyn Monroe, Ron Brown, the list goes on.

good question, i think of maximum are basically no longer inspired adequate to do something distinctive then what they already be responsive to. it takes artwork to be an recommended citizen and it takes extra artwork to make your political management pay interest to you once you do not have money.
