I am looking to get some of my work published. I write stories that range from horror to deranged thrillers. Any input would help as I am trying to get into a writing career.

I am an author with two books published by Macmillan and I am familiar with representatives from several publishers.
First, you need an honest agent.
Any person who represents him/herself as a literary agent and tells you that you need to pay any money 'up front' is a crook.
And, there is not one major publisher who accepts submissions from the author, even a well-published one.
There are many "vanity presses" that will print your book for a set fee, but even if they claim to have publishers who buy from them, DO NOT BELIEVE THEM.
I know a few publishers who have told me that they buy an average of one book for every 10,000 that agents show them.
So, with those realities and others that I didn't specify, I would say that your chances of finding any publisher past vanity presses are very, very slim.

I would say that any publisher would publish your stories if they are good. Just send in your work to different publishers and hope for the best. I would suggest getting a few books from the same genre as yours and see who published them and send in your work to places like that. Hope that helps some and Good Luck!

Getting a literary agent first is usually suggested. But if you want to skip the agent, then go to the bookstore, look for books that are similar to what you plan on writing, and take note of the publisher. Go to their websites and find their rule for submission.

Good luck!!

be brave: if you believe what you write is good, then self-publish. Many well-known, established writers have done this.
