Of course they do.
So do our ISPs, many Internet providers turn over their records to the government without being forced to either.
It's a hypocrisy, they say we have privacy in our own home, yet the wan't to know what we do in our own home.
Look at the patriot act it undermines the constitution, it even allows the government to see what books we read? Why do they need to know I just read "a dummie guide book on being an idiot"?
Liberties I've lost in the last few years as a citizen of the United States:
1. It's now legal for authorities to search my home via a secret, sealed warrant, without my knowledge (violating my right to due process, privacy and a slew of other rights).
2. It's now legal to hold me indefinitely without charges on the sole basis of being a suspected terrorist (violating my right to due process).
3. I can't send an e-mail or an instant message without having it viewed, censored, and assesed by the government (violating my right to free speech).
4. I can no longer check a book out from the library without the government having access to my reading list (chilling effect on freedom of speech).
5. Banks must now report any "suspicious" activity in my bank accounts directly to the government (illegal search and seizure).
6. In three years, when the Real ID Act goes into effect, I'll have to carry around a form of ID that, literally, broadcasts my vital personal information (age, sex, location, photo, signature, etc.) (illegal search and seizure).
Does anyone remember the First Amendment? If anyone thinks that the our rights are not constantly under fire from the government should think again. 9/11 and the PATRIOT Act have allowed the government to mount a successful attack on First Amendment rights. For those of you who didn't take participation in government in high school here is a short review of what the First Amendment guarantees the citizens:
1. Disallows the establishment of a state endorsed religion
2. Right to free speech
3. Disallows limitations of a free press
4. Guarantees freedom of religion
The President preaches about "advancing freedom" and, at the same time, keeps prisoners detained indefinitely without access to legal counsel in secret. We hear it all the time about how Saddam had secret prisons where people were tortured and how Saddam used vast intelligence networks to turn people against each other and keep them in line. What about when we do it in our secret prisons and detention centers?
How is the PATRIOT Act, which allows the FBI to monitor your reading habits, different?
We are no longer the land of the free.
The rights to bear arms was given to us by the founding fore fathers to have the security of a free state. These same rights where given with the idea in mind that if this country becomes as bad as we where fore warned about, the citizens will have the right to overthrow any government which makes us tyrants.
"Land of the Free." It is nothing but the land of slaves. Look in the mirror and say it with me, "I'm a hypocrite."

Absolutely, if they didn't how could a website like google trends exsist. Or how could the army send recruitment e-mails which are supposed to be random but somehow end up primarily in the mailboxes of unmarried males ages 18-25.

Observing to see if they are going to start something here and try recruit US citizens into their groups. Also looking out for gangs, new and old. I think we would be amazed all the things they look for on line.

Because they think we are communicating about blowing stuff up on the internet. They are acting like care about terrorists but they just want to steal trade secrets.
