Read on the Internet. Ask a friend or someone who has done it.
practise on older computers once you have read quite a bit.
Study the basics and the none basics about PC. You need to learn Hardware and software. You could also take a course if you want.
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/ram.htm <--- That's a site that can teach you how things work it has many things about PCs. Its not super important to know how things work when you build your own PC but it does help.
To the post below mine. I custom built a PC worth about 6-7K for about 5000 dollars. The mother board was 1500 and the Video card was 800. The rest of the computer is still good but that's why it is so expensive.
But yes you can get a kick *** PC made by a company for 2 grand but it will not compare to a smart custom built PC.
And liquid cooling was a Payne too. Man its expensive making good computer costs a lot.
My old HP AMD prebuild computer was awesome. It changed my look on processors. I would never put a non AMD processor in a PC again. AMD provides solid great processors heck a 3500+ AMD processor still kicks as in today's world. I use dual 4400 processors.

Building a computer today is not 1990s. It's the cheapest way to get a computer. How is saving money "so 1990s" ???
Anyhow the best way to learn is to research and read. The internet is the best resource to find out what you need to know. Plus asking PC techs that you know will help.
The second best is trial and error. Let's just hope the error isn't very costly to you.
Building a computer is easy IF you know generally know what you're doing, know what fits with what, and you have some common sense. Plus it's the cheapest way to own a PC.

Glad to hear people are still interested in building their own, it's the best way to know you have quality parts instead of the cheap PSUs, poor performing integrated graphics, cheap slow memory and not enough of it etc. of most Dells or gateways. If you build your own you'll be sure to buy a case that is designed with upgrading in mind, instead of the huge hassle it can be to upgrade something as simple as memory in a bought PC.
Heres a good link aimed at a beginner:

The magazine MAXIMUM PC is extremely good for both beginners and advanced builders.
Start out by going on to the Internet to either www.directron.com
www.newegg.com or monarchcomputers.com.
copy each part and paste it into a word document.
copy the URL and the price along with a short description
You will then have the computer, that you built at the price that you want to pay on paper. Too, you have the WEB site of each item. Check out the URL below.

Building a computer is so 1990s. Today it is so cheap to let a company build it, there is no point. All building a computer is, is slapping together components you bought separately. You can order them that way online and have it preassembled.

Find an old computer that is worthless but still works, and take it apart and put back together a couple times. Then try a couple upgrades on it. Finally, when you feel comfident, try your hand a building one. (Its not that hard)

get an old computer
junked up/ broken
take it apart
and rebuild it
if you can do everything
and have it better looking than before
then you have mastered it
then from there
learn how to overclock it
using the motherboard BIOS
that takes longer
learning to build only takes about 3 hours max
