True or False: You'd rather be his girlfriend than just his friend?
If you can honestly answer false (and he can too) then go for it. It might be fun. You probably know eachother better than anyone else and that is a great basis for a friendship.
If you still answer true, that's ok too. Tell him you'd like to hang out but maybe in a month or so. You aren't quite ready yet and don't want anything to be awkward or emotional. If he really just wants to be friends, he'll respect that.

If you want to just be his friend and you are sure he feels the same way and he isn't just trying to get you back, then go ahead. He obviously wants to keep in touch with you, so why not make an effort to be friends?

Sometimes, ex can turn to a true friend because they know each other well. I think you should give him a chance.
