It reduces the chance of wrist injury because it reminds you to not try to break your fall when sliding by using your hands. Same for sliding into a base head first and tagging it with your hands.

because the base runner doesn't want to tear up their hands when sliding in headfirst. only people that steal a lot of bases such as Juan Pierre do this!

when running its easier to hold something so that when you run your fingers dont twitch.. it also makes you concentrate more about throwing your arms through while you run
