I am in charge of a small club of college students and we are raising money for an educational trip.

- Do i need a tax id number to get ask for donations from places?
-I heard that you can use your social security number? Is this true? Do you report this on your taxes?

no, you don't need a tax id to ask for donations.

If you are making a personal profit, use your ss number.

yes you need that number. A social security number may do. Really, however, you need a 501(c)(3) certificate as a charity to really take a donation and allow the business to write it off as a donation. The guy is giving you a break just asking for the tax id, and would be a saint to take a ssn.

Big brother wants it to keep track of everything going on. They probably want it for the 501 or 503 C3 Charter for tax credits. Some places will want it while others wont .

never ever ever ever use your social number for anything do not even carry it around but yes you do need a tax i d number go to the better business burea for info or go to a grocey store and ask because if you social gets in the wrong hands and your identity gets stolen you will have a very very hard time clearing it.

Sounds like the dollar amount of the contribution you are looking for is small enough that you wouldn't need an id of any kind.

no you don't. i'm not sure if you need one for the grocery store to be able to write off the donation though. when you inquire to the grocery store or anywhere else tell them that you will post their store's name on a board rocognizing them for their donation. that way they can write off thier donation as advertising costs.
