Eugene (or Joshua):
Pretty much all of the well-known browsers offer a similar look and feel, but there are important differences, and you're asking a good question.
The browser that you're current using, Microsoft's Internet Explorer (which, by the way, is about to be replaced by a new version called IE 7.0), is far and away the most widely used. Of course, the reason it's widely used is because it comes bundled on just about any PC or non-Apple laptop sold, so most people learned it, are comfortable with it, and haven't really tried much of anything else (or understood why they might want to).
The biggest concern that people have about Internet Explorer is related to Microsoft's less-than-stellar record of offering a secure browser. Because IE is the "standard", it's the browser that's subject to the greatest number of "attacks" - people trying to figure out how to take advantage of "holes" in the browser's security in order to "break into" other people's computers. It may well be that some of the competitors aren't all that much better under the hood, but because fewer people use them, there's less effort made to attack them, and that makes them safer.
I, personally, use Mozilla's Firefox, and I switched to it a couple of years ago. When I first switched, the thing I liked best was that there was no learning curve - as a former IE user, I felt comfortable using it from day one.
As a more experienced user, now, I prefer Firefox because it's more personalizable, because it helps prevent pop-ups, because it's more secure from attacks by hackers, because holes that are discovered in the software are patched more quickly, etc. I wouldn't go back.
I think to really appreciate why Firefox is a better choice than Internet Explorer requires that you really know a lot about browsers and how they work - otherwise, on the surface, at least, they seem a lot alike, and I can understand why you might not really see the advantages. If you're not that computer savvy, I'd recommend that you at least give it a try - accepting for the moment that it's a safer and more secure browser for you to use.
Hey - I'm not a Mozilla rep, so I'll let them take over from here. If you're interested, visit the link below, where you can read more about Firefox, and download it, if you decide to do so.
Good luck!

The old Internet explorer did not allow multiple tabs like in SBC Yahoo Browser. Mozilla Firefox was thought to be less prone for virus attack and hacker.
SBC Yahoo Browser along with your membership allows you to keep the handy dandy Bookmarks wherever you go. It is useful to have the same bookmarks wherever you use the Internet.
They also look different. You may prefer how your Internet displays or how your homepage looks like. Different browsers also come with different add-ons. Some are more compatible to make use of certain instant messenger (for example: yahoo messenger and SBC Yahoo browser, etc.).
You just have to try different kinds and decide for yourself.
Have fun.

Firefox complies with W3C standards, while IE complies with Microsoft's own standards. W3C is supposed to be universal but still 85% of web users use IE so most websites are designed to work in IE. Users of MACs and UNIX machines will be more likely to be using W3C browsers. So, if you want to emulate what those users see use Firefox!

U.S. CERT recommended to everyone that you use anything besides IE and OE!!!
They have total ADMIN privileges on Microsoft Windows systems, so anything you open that is a virus or exploit, or trojan or ppop-up,m or pop-in, or malware, or adware, all goes into your REGISTRY in the SYSTEM!!!
So, you don't need to do ANYTHING with IE or OE! You simply go to the Mozilla website and get Firefox, and Thunderbird...

Try using Firefox. The benefits of tabs (instead of always opening a new IE window) are great.
