Sundials are known from ancient Egypt, and were developed further by other cultures, including the Chinese, Greek, and Roman cultures.

The sun dial was probabaly first invented by a fisherman who spent many hours and many days at his favorite fishing spot. The time spent there allowed for observation and thought about many things such as the movement of shadows.

the Berlin museum has a piece of a sundial from 1500BC, the Greeks had them by 450BC. nobody really knows who invented them or when.

Babylonians were the first one who invented it but the ones who made them known were the Egyptians. uhh....
