Good question. I wonder if there is a scientific study that can answer this. I wonder if this varies from person to person.

My personal experience is that laughter is harder to hold in.

For some reason, I can cry in the inside. Tears may well up in my eyes, but I can hold in crying. But maybe that is because I have had practice at this.

There are many reasons to cry but I have cried long and hard because my little boy died. I no longer waste tears on small stuff. I don't cry at what some people think is sad. They don't know sad until they've lost their little boy to death. Still, my heart cries, all alone. My eyes ran out of tears of grief...

But I still weep easily when I witness good things...when goodness comes out in people.

Laughter, on the other hand, is like an explosion. When I try to hold it in, I feel like my brain might burst!!! Giggles multiply the more you suppress them. They bubble out of my mouth no matter how hard my lips try to squeeze them back.

Laughter is like hope. It is meant to skip out into the world, bringing cheerfulness and mirth to all the people. It is against the very nature of laughter to be held in.

One day, my little girl and I heard a little boy fart in class. Everyone but my little girl laughed. I was so proud of her. I later commented, "You didn't laugh at the little boy who farted! I'm so proud of you!"

She said in her little girl voice, "I was laughing in my mind."

LOL...so you see, I suppose the ability to hold in laughter or tears is a very individual matter.

:)

It really depends on the situation, but I would say it's harder not to cry. When you laugh you can compose yourself...but when something makes you cry that's when you inner being is emotionally effected and when you try not to cry you build up alot of pressure in your body trying to contain the emotion that your body is trying to release.
