I used a old unpainted cookie sheet, I filled it with a small amount of water then placed the bowl inside. The moat keeps all forms of crawling pests away from the food. When the cookie sheet formed a thin layer of rust, I no longer needed to add water as the pests would not cross the rust. Very effective without pesticides or poisons and minimal maintainance... I was very happy with the result.

The old beer trick works well. Take an aluminum pie pan and sink it slightly into the ground. Fill it with beer. The slugs wil crawl in and drown. You won't believe how many you will kill this way. I don't think you can keep them from coming around though.

You can get some kind of slug stuff at the co-op. Don't you wish you could hear them scream when you salt them ?

I don't know that you can keep them away without using products dangerous for your dog, but they will be distracted if you put a pan of beer out for them. Not sure why, but snails and slugs love it and they drown themselves in it.

Sprinkle salt around the area so when they try to come in they will have to go through the salt and die. Don't know if it would work but it sounds good to me!

I would try sprinkling the salt aournd or buying something specfically for killing them. Make sure your dog does not eat them they will kill her if she does. I had two dogs die from eating slugs.
